One night in 2005 my mom collapsed, her entire left side was paralyzed. I called some friends of hers and we took her to our local hospital (we don't have a medical aid). She was diagnosed as having had a stroke. The next day she was send to Pietersburg to see a specialist. The stroke was caused by high colestrol and the specialist diagnosed her with atherosclerosis. Her colestrol level was 13 and the normal should be 5 or lower. She never complained about pain or anything. She used to joke about her colestrol level. She was sent to Garankuwa for a consultation about a bypass operation. When she came back that evening she told me she's not going cause the hospital is in a terrible state. I never realized how serious her condition was until I found her dead in the house on 5 June 2006, she turned 51 on 16 May that year. I felf very guilty, maybe if I was there I could've done something or get her to a doctor in time. The doctor that did the autopsy and issued the death certificate said the heart attack was so massive that nothing could be done. She was alive one second and dead the next. It has been 2 years, but I still feel guilty sometimes. My mom was all I had, she and my dad got divorced when I was 3 and I don't have any brothers and sisters.

Luckily Wally got help before it was too late for him, like it was for my mom. Good luck to you Wally and make the most of this second chance that God gave you.

Jani

Hi Wally

You are truly blessed to have been given the chance not only to enrich us with this knowledge and experience, but also to be granted a second lease on life.

I have been following you, your family and Noeleen on 3 talk, not forgeting the others who were involved on the show. I really would like to take this opportunity to say that indeed Wally you have changed the lives of many people including mine. You are truly an inspiration. I cant help but say it was a very painful, scary yet so informative experience. I watched the whole time of the Live Surgery and prayed for you through out. God is great. Above everything i wish you a speedy recovery and a long healthy life.

Wally

More Wally

Hi there,

I thought it a good idea to share my story as well. I am a 26-year old male. I am a financial manager at an engineering company in Alrode. I was diagnosed with a very dangerously high level of cholesterol during 2005. I was told that my problem is genetic. My total cholesterol level was 16.5 with my HDL-levels very low. What led to my initial cholesterol test was the fact that I had already started to experience angina. The pain would increase when I was exercising, and disappear when I eventually finalized my work-out and cooled down. I went to see a cardiologist. The EKG’s looked fine and he had no reason to expect any problems I was very healthy and fit. I was however not satisfied and I insisted on an angiogram. I was admitted to hospital that very same day (During October 2005) and the procedure was performed that evening. He discovered that two arteries have been very badly clogged up. The doctor proceeded to insert a stent in one of the arteries to open it up, and for the other artery the balloon only was used. Sorry, but I’m not sure what the procedure is called. This was almost three years ago. I still see my cardiologist annually and I follow a very healthy eating plan and exercise program. I am on life-long cholesterol lowering medication. It is a very tedious procedure bringing my cholesterol levels down. After all this time my total cholesterol level is still very high (10.1) and the balance between LDL, HDL and triglisorides is still not favorable. I believe more should be done amongst children especially, to find out who of them has this problem, and providing the necessary treatment. I was 24 when my problem was identified. My doctor told me that had we not discovered it when we did, I might not have seen age 26. If my problem was discovered when I was still a child, things could have been much different. What a wake-up call! Staying positive and disciplined is key here, and praying. God is good! He gave me a second chance.

Thanks for allowing us to share.

Kind regards,

Hennie Stander

Hi Wally

My family and I wishing you a speedy recovery from your operation, since I have seen that I have realized how careless I was when coming to diet, I have learned a lot from your operation and I have started to choose the right diet because of your strength to allow us to see when you were been operated. Hello Wally

What happened on 2 August 2008 was history and I have learned a lot from that, in deed it opened my mind that eating healthy is very important and should start at a young age9and that it's never too late to start), you know my husband has been saying that he does not want fatty foods or too much salt and that we should eat healthy( he participates in marathons like Two ocean and Commorades marathon and other marathons taking place around our area) well I have been trying to do as he is saying but I think I did not practice it as much as he emphasized but after watching and listening to 3 Talk on 2 August 2008 it really opened my mind and eyes.Thank you Wally & Family and Noleen for educating us. As for Noleen you are a star may your programme continue for ever.

Get well soon

Agnes Mohlala

Wally & Family,

Watching the op on Saturday made me realize how often we take our life for granted and we think will be healthy forever. I hope the pain is not too bad the Dr's have given you something very strong for it. Thank you for giving the us a shock therapy, so that we can realize how bad lifestyle will do to us later in life.Keep well and speedy recovery.

Sibongile, Pretoria

Dear Wally (& Family)

WOW, wait an eye-opener and priviledge for us as family to have witnessed you op last night. At times we felt very faint and had to turn away from watching, but it was awesome. We wish you a speedy recovering and know that our Heavenly Father was in control of that situation last night. He has given you another chance in life, so go out there and grab it with both hands. I so wish my husband would stop smoking, exercise, loose weight, eat properly (he is only 45) etc. Why is it that something bad first has to happen in your life before you do something drastic to change your circumstances.? You hang in there and we would love to hear how things are going. 2 years ago my husbands uncle (then 74) had a bypass and I had the priviledge of going to fetch him at the hospital. I was amazed to see how comfortable he was with all the staples, stitches etc. He was obedient and did exactly but his cardiologist prescribed and today he is a healthy man still managing to do what he loves most and that is repairing vehicles. To your wife, children and grandchildren, have faith and support Wally. Your love and caring he needs and you can look forward to living a happy, healthy life with him. We also thank the Lord for the team of medical experts who so calmly performed your op.

God Bless you all

Hi my name is Michele Liston aged 56 Eight years ago I experienced an irregular heart rate. This was corrected with betablockers, taken for three months ,I have never smoked but lived a very social life involving alcohol and good eating luckily I have always loved exercising so consider myself fit. In June this year I was playing squash at the local gym when I developed a atrial fibrillation after a restless night, visit to the doctor the following day I ended up in CCU. luckily, my heart did not have to be shocked the medication brought my heart rate down . After an angiogram we discovered that I have a damaged heart muscle no blocked arteries, so shall have to watch that I do not over exert myself in the future. This was caused by a virus maybe when I had bad flu 2 years ago . Ironically I stopped drinking alcohol 4 months ago. If more damage is done it will mean a heart transplant. Prayer really helps I shall be praying for you Wally and watching on TV. God is great!

Dearest Wally

My kolesterol was toe 9.7 mmol/L en dis nou 4.2mmol/L. Maar nietemin, ek het destyds my hele lewenstyl tengoede verander - veral my eetgewoontes.

Hi Wally.

Thank you for allowing us to see the operation last night.
Because of this, I have decided to take control of my bad life style.
I do suffer with cholesterol but have always relied on my medication to
keep it under control. Not anymore. As of today. I have spent some time
on the Heart foundation website and downloaded quite a lot of information
to help me. A friend of mine also had a by pass this week.
I have also made her copies of the information.
Thanks to your generosity, I understand what she has gone through,
and will be able to help her and her family through it.
God bless and a happy spiritual life for you and your family.
It could not have been easy for them either.

Thank you.

Shirley

Ek is 54jr oud.

Ons weet dit sal goed gaan , STERKTE.
