THE SILENT EPIDEMIC - HEART DISEASE

Make your New Year's Resolution a Heart Healthy One

We've just come through the festive season where, once again, horrific road deaths made the front pages of all the newspapers. International statistics show that 1.2 million people die on roads worldwide each year while 17.5 million people worldwide die of heart disease each year.

Quietly and insidiously, cardiovascular disease is claiming more and more South African lives annually, edging up to the already tragic death rate of AIDS. Can we deal with yet another epidemic? "So many people who are unaware of the risks of heart disease and yet there are plenty of simple ways to avoid this illness. Cardiovascular disease is so easily preventable," says Shân Biesman-Simons, Director of Nutrition and Education of the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA.

The Challenge Complacency Campaign urges South Africans to wake up to the fact that they should assess their risk of heart disease, have a good look at their diet and lifestyle and maybe make some changes.

We have cardiologists and experts in this field ready to be interviewed and give any information needed to get this message across to your readers, as well as ordinary South Africans who have suffered from heart disease and are happy to share their stories.
